Physiotherapy for children: what parents should know

Physiotherapy for children looks quite different from adult sessions. The goals are the same — better movement, strength and confidence — but the approach is built around a child’s world: play, encouragement and patience.

What a pediatric session looks like

Sessions are kept gentle, playful and age-appropriate. Exercises are often disguised as games, and parents are encouraged to stay involved throughout, since consistency at home between visits makes a real difference to progress.

Milestones worth mentioning to a physiotherapist

  • Delayed sitting, crawling or walking compared to typical timelines
  • Noticeably uneven or asymmetrical movement patterns
  • Frequent clumsiness, tripping or difficulty with coordination
  • Postural concerns noticed by a parent, teacher or pediatrician
  • Recovery needs after an injury, cast removal or surgery

None of these on their own necessarily mean something is wrong — children develop at different rates — but they are worth an assessment if a parent feels something is not quite tracking as expected.
