After a sprain, strain or knock, the first two or three days usually call for rest, ice and gentle protection of the area. Beyond that early window, though, waiting too long to get things checked can slow your recovery down.
Signs it is time to book an assessment
- Pain or swelling that is not gradually easing after 3–5 days
- Difficulty putting weight on a leg, or using an arm normally
- A joint that feels unstable, or repeatedly “gives way”
- Pain that is stopping you from returning to work, sport or daily activities
- A previous injury to the same area that never fully resolved
Why earlier is usually better
Left alone, minor injuries can lead to compensations — you start moving differently to avoid discomfort, which can create new problems elsewhere. An early assessment identifies exactly what is injured and gives you a clear, staged plan, so you protect the area without losing more movement or strength than necessary.
What an assessment involves
We look at how the injury happened, test movement and strength, and rule out anything that needs further imaging or a specialist referral. Most people leave the first visit with a clear home programme and a realistic timeline for returning to normal activity.
